Confessions of a True Bridezilla

When did wanting the perfect wedding become wrong? Sometimes I don't understand this world. Why oh why did everyone start calling me Bridezilla? What did I do wrong? If I tell my story, maybe I can understand why everyone, including my fiancé, runs when they see me. I haven't done anything wrong. In fact I insist that everything be done right. Here is my story.

I have been planning my wedding since I was five years old. I was a flower girl for the first time. I was a natural; I was gorgeous with my curly blonde hair, white dress, and little flower basket. No one had to push me down the aisle like that silly ring bearer. I walked with grace and style because all eyes were on me. After my performance, I was asked to be flower girl for five weddings before the reception was over. I was hooked; weddings became my life. I watched each bride to get pointers of what to do and what not to do.

In a few years, I graduated to junior bridesmaid. Again I shined because being perfect for the wedding was my life. I did so many weddings that my Dad tried to complain but Mom and I ignored him. Being in so many weddings was expensive but I was happy and perfect.

Of course, the next step was to be a bride. I got engaged before any of my friends. We decided on a year to plan the wedding; my mother and I needed the time so that my extravaganza would be better than any wedding ever. This is when I became known as Bridezilla.

It all started with the gift registry. I have been to hundreds of showers because brides always invited me whether I was the flower girl or the junior bridesmaid. I learned early what showers are for. Presents, presents, and more presents. I had visions of crystal vases, fine china, silverware, and tons of other goodies. My only problem is that I worried constantly that people would give me the wrong stuff. I would be stuck with stupid junk like toasters, pot holders, and crappy glassware. Fortunately, I knew the answer to my worries-the Bridal Registry.

My worries were over. I would register at every bridal gift registry in town. Everyone would want to give me the perfect present and would obsess over my choices for the gift registry. They would check the Internet as soon as they received the invitations to my showers to make sure they got to pick the best presents on my bridal registry. I would make sure that all invitations included the stores where I had registered. The list would be long, but I was just trying to give people plenty of options. I have always been a giver; I try to help people when I can. Therefore, I would help to guide them in their efforts to give me the perfect present.

The first place I registered was the Pier One Imports Bridal Registry. I know what you are thinking; that is so cliché. But I like Pier One; sue me. I didn't take my fiancé with me because he was out of town on business. I hated make my choices without him, but he hates to shop. I was trying to save him the aggravation. Remember; I am a giver. The lady in charge of the Bridal Registry gave me a little scanner and I went wild. I scanned and scanned. My house would be so cute when people bought everything I scanned. I didn't bother with the cheap stuff; I went for the pricey items. I didn't want to embarrass my friends by acting like I thought they were cheap.

I was hooked; scanning presents was even more fun than planning the table settings, choosing the wedding flowers, or finding a dress. I took out the phone book and my date book. I planned a bridal gift registry for each Saturday until I had finished the phone book. After Pier One, I did the gift registry at Bed, Bath, and Beyond and then the Bloomingdales Bridal Registry. You see where I am going with this. I started at the top of the alphabet after Pier One and went on and on. After Strawbridges, I was done until my fiancé mentioned he might want to choose some gifts too.

Because I wanted my groom-to-be to be happy, we went to the Home Depot Bridal Registry. I handed my fiancé the scanner and he scanned a bunch of stupid stuff like tools and lawn junk. I crossed my fingers when I told him I would be sure to include Home Depot on my Bridal Gift Registry list for my showers. He'll never know. Who needs that kind of junk any way when you could have crystal and lace tablecloths?

I can see this is when I became Bridezilla. All I talked about was Bridal Gift Registry presents. I couldn't stop. I need help. Is there a rehab for Bridal Registry addicts? Wait a minute. Was that the door? Yes, it's a present from my Pier One Import's Bridal Registry. How silly of me; I can stop whenever I want. I am ok; maybe I will register at just one more online Bridal Registry.
